Overall Mk4’s seem to have shown themselves to be fairly robust cars, but a couple of things do come up fairly frequently; Fuel vaporiser on the 2.0 Diesel – Commonly seems to fail around the 100K miles mark as it cogs up with soot. It is used to heat up the DPF to aid regenerating. Failure causes the DPF to clog up.
I have a 57 plate 2.0tdci zetec and its always done this intermittently although behaved perfectly when taken back to the dealers I bought it from. On my insistence they did replace the battery but to no avail. Interestingly on a cold morning last week it took several attempts to start, not the usual 2.
Have you got the problem solved? I also have the same DTC code P2002 on my Mondeo 2.0 tdci duratorq -07 but I get it together with P1335 wich is a fault in the EGR System. Did you check your EGR system?
Since using Shell diesel has improved the hunting (DOESNT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME AS BEFORE) but not got rid of hunting 100%. It idles smoothly at 800 rpm or just below 800 rpm (say 775rpm etc) BUT when it drops it drops it goes as low as 716rpm-750rpm as recorded on live data test.! Thats when it makes the engine hunt.
