limit it to level 80 only. select the 3 stats you want the item to include (power, precision, ferocity for power dps gear for example) search and sort by price. buy the gear that is the cheapest but with the stats you need. An armor item for a power dps build should cost around 30-40 silver. trinkets around 1-2g.
Short end of the stick: If the item is ascended, you want zerker. All ascended items provide great zerker efficiency. After trinkets, you want zerker hands, feet, gloves. These are all equal. After that you want one-handed weapons. After that, chest or two handed weapon.
There are also PoF recipes: Zehtuka (Harrier), Marshal (Nadijeh), Grieving (The Twins). The recipes are 10-20g each and crafting requires various PoF mats. If you have enough laurels to buy recipes, I'd recommend going with the Hronk (or similar alternatives) you need.
All these can be directly bought from trading post with gold but also each material can be acquired from farming either silverwastes or drizzlewood or any meta for fine/masterwork/rare gear and some by logging/mining around in maps. And then you craft the rest. Of course the most straightforward way is to make gold and buy whatever you need.
